He’s a 17-year-old orphan with nightmares who has to fare for himself. How is he supposed to know all that? It’s not as if anyone’s ever been there to teach him.
If it was a magic tuxedo (kind of like the senshi’s fukus), you’d have a point, but in this case, I think it’s just realistic. He’s trying his best but he doesn’t have a clue.
Considering his legendary fashion sense (maboroshi no fashion sense?) Mamoru wearing a tuxedo wrong is totally in-character.

Actually, he was mostly correct in both the anime and the manga.  (peaked lapels, vest a decent length, gentle curve of the open breast, trim waist, well fitted in some, not always perfect, but usually he looked pretty good)
In fact, in the manga, he was a school boy who owned -multiple- tuxedos.

Your post is a valiant effort in defense of Mamoru Chiba, but it misses the point.  I didn’t make that comparison sheet because I hate Mamoru and wanted to make him look bad.  I made it because I love him, he was one of my favorite characters, he always looked like a badass, because his moniker literally starts with the word ‘Tuxedo’, so, no pun intended, but I don’t think I’m asking for the moon when I expect the animators of SMC to put even a modicum of research into what an appropriate tuxedo looks like (that doesn’t just consist of punching the word ‘tuxedo’ into google images.)  Naoko Takeuchi and the original animation team managed to do it just fine.
The other thing that bugs me.  People always talk about ‘Mamoru fashion’.  The dude had an awesome fashion sense. Let’s face it, a lot of 90s fashions didn’t hold up well to time, but at the very least Takeuchi gave him what would have been pretty hip clothes at the time.

Galerie d’Apollon / The Louvre

My gloomy ass pics from when I went, but here’s a website that explains the history of the room. It also includes info about the restoration of Charles Le Brun’s paintings. He was the artist who was commissioned to decorate the ceiling of this room at the Louvre when it was still a functioning palace. There’s even some info about the four artists that worked on the stucco and even a style analysis!
